Our Family

Our Farm & Family

Our Story.

We are the Bruneau family: Phil & Robyn and our two fabulous teens. Uprooting from our farm in East Central Alberta, we have chosen to transplant ourselves in Camrose--Phil's hometown. After living in various forms of intentional community, we feel called to a new season of life in a community that is full of good people, beautiful green spaces and a dynamic interchange of culture, faith and learning.

Nestled into this new community, we feel called to a gentle way of life that presses into the mystery of how sacred space, the ancient scriptures and meaningful relationships somehow conspire to coax our souls out of hiding. Our piece of land is smaller now--just a modest city lot--yet somehow, in this season of global crisis and the struggle to make sense of our fragile humanity, we are still naive enough to believe that a bit of space offered in a spirit of hospitality can do a world of good.

Our Story.

We are the Bruneau family: Phil & Robyn and our two fabulous teens. Having started our family in Edmonton, we moved to this berry farm in 2013 to share life with our dear friends, John and Gwen.

After living in intentional community with them for seven years, they are now retiring off the farm while we seek to deepen our vision for this farm and continue John & Gwen's legacy of a deep love for the land and the practice of exuberant hospitality.  We've called ourselves Two Sparrows. It is a reference to a sermon Jesus taught from a hillside near the Sea of Galilee: Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father...So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.

                                                                                                                   ~ Matthew 10: 29-31

Our Vision.

Our Vision.

As a family, we are committed to living oikonomia, seeking to align our lives with the beautiful and compelling economy of God. We believe that the ways of God are good and kind and that simple acts of creativity, neighbourliness and compassion help to restore our deeper humanity and open us up to the fullness of the life God has imagined for us.

We called our farm Two Sparrows. It is a reference to a sermon Jesus taught from a hillside near the Sea of Galilee:

Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father...So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows?                                                    ~ Matthew 10: 29-31

We still call ourselves Two Sparrows with the hopes that our farm's legacy of creation care, hospitality and a faith-infused way of life will take on new meaning for us here in our new home.

Under the canopy of this big Alberta sky, we feel called to a gentle way of life that presses into the mystery of how the beauty of nature, the sacred scriptures and meaningful relationships somehow conspire to coax our souls out of hiding. Our land is small--not much more than an acreage--yet somehow, in this season of global crisis and the struggle to make sense of our fragile humanity, we are still naive enough to believe that a bit of land can do a world of good. Sometimes it's about taking a slow walk along the prayer trail with a dog at your side. Sometimes it's about sharing our story with each other while spending a quiet afternoon picking berries together.

We believe that in these simple acts, our deeper humanity is restored and we can begin to live into the fullness of the life that God has imagined for us.

Come, taste and see...

Our Land.

We hold our land as a sacred trust, handed down to us by those who have cared for these ten acres over many generations. We are particularly grateful for Treaty 6 First Nations who held this territory as traditional meeting grounds, gathering place, and travelling route to the Cree, Salteaux, Blackfoot, Metis, Dene and Nakota Sioux. Many first nations, Metis and Inuit footsteps have marked these lands for centuries.

We are grateful for this piece of earth that we've been given a stewardship of. Here we seek to live out the values of peacemaking, creation care and community-building for the sake of this land, our children, our neighbours, and God's good name.

"Earth's crammed with heaven,

And every common bush afire with God,

But only he who sees takes off his shoes;

The rest sit round and pluck blackberries. "
